Project Details

TAI, an S&B subsidiary, provided preliminary design and detailed design of the Polar Security Cutter (PSC) for the US Coast Guard. Up to three ships are slated for construction and will be the US’s largest and most capable icebreakers.

The PSC program is a multiyear Department of Homeland Security Level 1 investment. It also serves as a major USCG initiative to fulfill its mission and support activities in the higher latitudes vital to the economic vitality, scientific inquiry and national interests of the US.

The ship is an evolution from the mature “Polar Stern II” design. S&B conducted a series of five-ship model tank tests to optimize the design and make incremental adjustments. The vessels are 460' long with an 88' beam and a full-load displacement of ~22,900 long tons.

Propulsion is diesel-electric at over 45,200 HP, with icebreaking capability up to 8 feet thick. The vessel will accommodate 186 personnel comfortably for up to 90 days.
